Tri-Co Federal Credit Union was chartered in 1936 as Morris County Teachers Federal Credit Union. It all began when ten local teachers subscribed a grand sum of $50.00 in capital and formed the Credit Union. Its charter number is 1151.
At that time, the Field of Membership (FOM) consisted only of employees of the Boards of Education in Morris County and their immediate family members. The Credit Union operated as an entirely volunteer organization until 1967 when the first professional General Manager was hired. At that time, total membership was approximately 2,000 and the Credit Union’s assets totaled $2 million. Today Tri-Co serves almost 14,000 members and total assets exceed $160 million.
Although Tri-Co’s membership still consists primarily of teachers and education-related groups such as educational support professionals, PTA and PTO organizations, it has expanded its presence to serve the county government employees and Freeholders in the counties of Morris, Sussex and Warren. In 1968, the employees and family members of the Boards of Education in Sussex and Warren counties were added and were eligible to join, and the Credit Union’s name was changed to Tri-Co Federal Credit Union. Since then, the field of membership has expanded to over 500 individual companies, municipalities, churches, colleges, hospitals and groups of all sizes including Newton Hospital, Hackettstown Community Medical Center, Morris, Sussex, and Warren County Community Colleges, as well as small businesses and sole proprietorships.
